You see even though I am a financial advisor by profession and have been for the last 16 years my secret is that I too have had many times in my life where I struggled with money problems. I read every financial guru’s book out there and tried to apply their advice, I went to workshops and took classes, Sometimes I even dug my way out of debt only to find myself right back in it again shortly after.
I am ashamed to say I even fell for a few get rich quick schemes over the years where I would buy some other guys system for getting rich only to find out that it required way more work than they let on and I ended up deeper in the hole for buying it.
All of this caused me to feel ashamed, embarrassed, depressed, and angry. I thought I would have to carry this weight for the rest of my life just like many of the middle American clients that I had been trying to help.
Speaking of those clients, this was a whole other area that constantly weighed on me. I was tired of watching them make financial mistake after financial mistake only to end up in worse and worse financial shape.
The funny thing was that many of them were doing exactly what the media and the so called "financial guru's" of our day were telling them to do but they still ended up getting burned over and over again! It was sickening to watch.
I saw many of them get out of debt only to end up right back in it. Others maxed our their retirement plans only to find out that they needed the money early and were forced to pay huge penalties and taxes, or worse yet they lost 30% or more fo their hard eraned savings to poor stock market conditions.
Otheres still put all of their extra savings into their home trying to pay it off early only to lose their job due to the changing ecconomy or an accident or illness causing them in some cases to lose their home and all of the hard earned money they had sunk in it.
After years of watching financial tragedy after financial tragedy and being frustrated that I was supposed be the one helping these people to avoid these circumstances it dawned on me that there had to be a better way. After all some people seemed to do just fine financialy even on moddest incomes, I often wondered what did they know that I didn't?
So after 10 years of struggling both financially and emotionally and watching my clients do the same I finally found a different and viable solution to my problem. It was quite a journey to find something that actually worked and I have to admit with my background in finance I was quite skeptical at first.
But the truth is I was desperate! My wife was pregnant with our first child and she had been working to help make ends meet. We really wanted to have her be a stay at home Mom and she was about to come home from work as our son was due to be born.
I cried and I prayed and I cried some more and then I stumbled upon what I still think to this day was a God send. I found a mentor who had been coaching financial advisors like me for the last 30 years. I had nothing to lose so I gave him a shot out of desperation and because of what he taught me life has never been the same for us since.
Don’t get me wrong I still have had some ups and down’s but now I am much better equipped to deal with them. I am no longer dependent on credit cards as my fall back plan and I actually feel financially secure for the first time in my life. In fact I have not felt this secure since it was my Mom and Dad’s responsibility to pay all of the bills. (Aren’t those some of the best years in life, I didn’t know how good I had it)
